For hikers and walkers who love rural hiking and walking with not much difficulty. This hiking and walking trip uses the classic colonial city of León and the sandy beach of Santo Domingo on Ometepe Island as dual bases for rural country walks, always with a beautiful volcanic cone in view and a relaxed pace. Staying in the historic city of León we travel to the Maribios Volcano chain, 21 cones in a line that rise up from just above sea level. The cones make a lovely backdrop for rural walking and hiking amongst country farms and forest. After the warm dry air of the Maribios Range we visit the lake island of Isla de Ometepe for walks around the island full of rustic country life and shadowed by two beautiful volcanoes wrapped in forest. This is the ideal active trip for people who want exercise with out heavy exertion and want to walk in the fresh clean air of Nicaragua, one of the least industrialized countries on the planet.

Rural Walking and Hiking Itinerary

DAY 01: MANAGUA - LEON
Airport greeting by our English speaking guide and private transportation for transfer to the Hotel El Convento in historic León.
DAY 02: SAN JACINTO - TELICA VOLCANO
Morning departure to the south side of the active Telica Volcano for a walk through the farm land that wraps the central range, leaving from the hissing and boiling fumaroles created by an exposed vein of the volcano. Great views of the volcano range. Return to León for afternoon at leisure. Lodging at Hotel El Convento.
DAY 03: CERRO NEGRO VOLCANO - EL TIGRE CRATER LAKE
Morning departure for the black sand, gravel and lava rock Cerro Negro Volcano slopes. Walk around this surreal landscape before a transfer to the secluded crater lake, Laguna El Tigre for a hike down into the crater for a swim or to just enjoy the views. Transfer back to León for lodging at Hotel El Convento.
DAY 04: LEON - SAN JORGE - MOYOGALPA - ISLA DE OMETEPE
Private land transfer with English speaking guide to dock at San Jorge for ferry to Ometepe Island. Dock greeting in 4x4 on Ometepe Island at Moyogalpa for transfer to Santo Domingo Beach. Afternoon at leisure on the beach. Lodging in private cabin at Hotel Villa Paraiso in Santo Domingo.
DAY 05: OMETEPE ISLAND
Walk to see the mysterious pre-Colombian petroglyphs at a rural country ranch. Afternoon to relax on the lake front or take another hike to the fresh water spring on a private banana farm. Lodging in private cabin at the Hotel Villa Paraiso.
DAY 06: SANTO DOMINGO - MOYOGALPA - SAN JORGE - MANAGUA
Morning swimming in warm Lake Nicaragua or a short nature walk. Later morning transfer in 4x4 to dock at Moyogalpa for ferry to the mainland. Dock greeting in San Jorge and private transfer to Managua for lodging at Hotel Intercontinental.
DAY 07: MANAGUA
Transfer to airport for flight home.
