Many
a traveler, while buzzing through a rural countryside in car or train,
has caught a fleeting glimpse of serene people, living in a simpler time.
The stressed-out traveler, whose holidays often feel a lot like workdays,
may have felt a slight tinge of envy. How difficult it seems to travel
back in time, to strip one's self of all the trappings and pressures of
the modern world. In Nicaragua time travel is actually extremely simple,
and for most, equally rewarding. Much of Nicaragua's countryside seems
to be lost in the 19th century.
Rural Nicaragua is a place where the incessant ringing of a cellular telephone,
traffic snarls, 24 hour stock updates, pollution and cold, depressed people
could only be imagined by a terminally pessimistic science fiction writer.
Nicaragua's countryside is full of fresh air days and starry nights and
populated with warm and friendly people who put more value in a simple
conversation and a good hearty meal than what is happening in the abstract
overdeveloped world.
Rural Nicaragua Life invites you to take a break, breath fresh air, read
a good book and eat a quiet meal while serenaded by birds. If you like,
you can ride horses, walk in the forest or pound out some tortillas and
cook them on a clay plate over an open flame. This is not "rural tourism" located
30 minutes from the nearest supermarket, with a double decafe espresso
and cyber-café just around the corner. In Nicaragua you cannot milk
a cow in the morning and delete spam from your in-box in the afternoon.
In rural Nicaragua you have no choice. You really must relax.
Nicaragua has many options for the rural visitor who wants to recharge
the batteries and leave it all behind for a while. Below is a suggested
itinerary that features the eternal spring climate and rustic mountain
beauty of northern Nicaragua's coffee country. A journey to the summit
of relaxation.
Rural Nicaragua Life Itinerary
DAY 01: MANAGUA
Airport greeting and transfer to Hotel Los Robles in Managua's restaurant
district.
DAYS 02-5: EL JAGUAR, JINOTEGA MOUNTAINS
Morning transfer north around the east shores of Lake Managua and up into
the northern mountain coffee growing region of Jinotega. North of Jinotega
hidden high up in the mountains is an organic coffee farm and cloud forest
nature reserve. Lodging is in simple cabins with private bath and lantern
lighting at night. The hacienda is great for hiking, reading and horseback
riding. During coffee picking season (mid-December through early March)
you can help the locals to pick some coffee and later drink your own private
brew. During off season for coffee you can help make fresh farmers cheese
or plant your own coffee tree. Family cooked meals of all fresh local ingredients
are accompanied by fresh fruit juices and the award winning coffee of the
farm. The forest reserve has pre-historic ferns, giant oaks, cedars and
an extremely rich bird life.
